A furnace filter's MERV rating is the industry standard for how well it cleans your air, and two filters with the same MERV capture the same particles, whatever the brand. Yet a Filtrete filter can cost more than double a generic at the identical MERV. So buy by cost per filter at the MERV you actually need, and skip the brand tax. Here is every option ranked by real value.
Prices reviewed 31 July 2026 . Cost per standard 1-inch filter in USD; sizes and thicker filters vary. Match the MERV to your system, higher is not always better. Not HVAC advice.
We costed 12 HVAC furnace filters by cost per filter at their MERV rating. At MERV 11, a generic Aerostar is ~$6 while a Filtrete is ~$15, the identical filtration for two-and-a-half times the price. Budget MERV 8 filters start at $4; premium Filtrete MERV 13 reaches $22. The MERV number is what protects your home, not the brand on the box.
Method: cost per standard 1-inch filter, grouped by MERV, the industry filtration standard. Same-MERV filters capture the same particles regardless of brand; Filtrete's MPR numbers are its own scale, not better filtration. For most homes MERV 8 to 13 is right, and higher is not always better: MERV 13+ restricts airflow and can strain a system not built for it. Cost per year assumes the changes you set. Standard 1-inch filters get changed every 30 to 90 days, so 4 to 12 a year. Pets and allergies mean changing more often.

Not at the same MERV. Two filters with the same MERV capture the same particles regardless of brand. A generic MERV 11 is ~$6, a Filtrete MERV 11 ~$15, double for identical filtration. You pay for the brand and build, not cleaner air.
Most homes want MERV 8 to 13: 8 for dust, 11 for allergens, 13 for fine particles. Do not just buy the highest, MERV 13+ restricts airflow and can strain or damage a system not built for it. Match MERV to your needs and equipment.
Every 30 to 90 days for 1-inch filters, more with pets or allergies; 6 to 12 months for 4-inch. Check monthly and swap when dirty. At four changes a year, a generic is ~$20 while premium branded filters hit $70 to $90 for the same job.
Only for the brand and build, not filtration. Filtrete is well made but its MPR numbers hide the standard MERV, and Nordic Pure, Aerostar or BNX at the same MERV protect just as well for often half the price.
