We costed 10 dishwasher detergents by cost per load. Store-brand powder is about $0.07 a load; premium pods like Finish Ultimate reach $0.37. Pods do bundle a rinse aid and convenience, so it is not identical-product markup, but powder or gel plus a rinse aid cleans about as well for a fraction of the cost. Over a year of daily washing the gap is real money.

Store-brand powder, around 6 to 8 cents a load, because you dose only what you need. Store-brand gel is similar. Name-brand powder and gel still beat pods on cost. A big box of powder plus a bottle of rinse aid is the lowest-cost combination.
Not dramatically. Good pods and good powders both clean well; machine, water hardness and loading matter more. Pods include a rinse aid, which helps spots and drying; adding rinse aid to powder closes most of the gap.
