Generic sleep aids are the same drugs as the brand.

Generic diphenhydramine is ZzzQuil, generic doxylamine is Unisom, and store-brand melatonin is the same molecule as the famous gummies. The FDA requires identical active ingredients, so they work the same for about half the price. And low-dose melatonin works as well as the high-dose products, so the big numbers on the box are marketing. Here is every option by real cost per dose, and which actually suit regular use.

Prices reviewed 31 July 2026 . Typical cost per dose, in USD. Not medical advice; see a doctor for ongoing sleep problems.

Brand sleep aids cost about 3 to 4× more than the identical generic

We costed 11 OTC sleep aids by cost per dose. Generic melatonin is a few cents a dose; generic diphenhydramine (ZzzQuil) and doxylamine (Unisom) are 5 to 10 cents, versus 20 or more for the brands. All are the same active ingredients. Two truths save you the most: buy the generic, and buy low-dose melatonin, because more milligrams do not work better.

Antihistamine sleep aids are for occasional use; melatonin is best low-dose for timing sleep. Prices are indicative and change. Two things the shelf will not tell you. First more melatonin is not better: 0.5 to 3 mg works as well as the 5 or 10 mg products for falling asleep, with fewer side effects and no morning hangover, so the high-dose gummies are marketing. Second antihistamine sleep aids (ZzzQuil, Unisom and their generics, which are diphenhydramine and doxylamine) build tolerance within days and cause next-day grogginess, so they are for the occasional bad night, not every night. For ongoing sleep trouble, fix sleep habits first and see a doctor.

How this works. Per dose is one night's dose. The key facts: generic and brand versions of each drug are the same active ingredient, FDA-bioequivalent, so a store-brand diphenhydramine is ZzzQuil and a generic doxylamine is Unisom, for about half. For melatonin, a plain low-dose (0.5 to 3 mg) generic works as well as the high-dose branded gummies, which are the priciest per dose and often overdosed. On type: melatonin and magnesium are gentler for semi-regular use and for timing sleep (jet lag, shift work); antihistamines (diphenhydramine, doxylamine) are stronger sedatives but build tolerance fast and cause next-day grogginess, so keep them for the occasional bad night. Do not combine two products with the same ingredient, and note many "PM" pain relievers already contain diphenhydramine. This is information, not medical advice; ongoing insomnia needs a doctor, not a bigger bottle.

Common questions

Is generic sleep aid the same as ZzzQuil or Unisom?

Yes. Generic diphenhydramine is ZzzQuil (and Benadryl); generic doxylamine is Unisom SleepTabs, the identical drugs at the same dose, FDA-bioequivalent, for about half. Store-brand melatonin is the same molecule as the branded gummies.

Does more melatonin work better?

No. Low-dose melatonin (0.5 to 3 mg) works as well as 5 or 10 mg for falling asleep, with fewer side effects and no hangover. The high-dose products are marketing; buy plain low-dose generic and take it a couple of hours before bed.

What is the cheapest sleep aid?

Plain generic melatonin at a few cents a dose, also the gentlest for timing sleep. Generic diphenhydramine and doxylamine are 5 to 10 cents. Store and Amazon brands are the same drugs as ZzzQuil and Unisom for roughly half.

Can I use antihistamine sleep aids every night?

They are meant for occasional use. Diphenhydramine and doxylamine build tolerance within days and cause next-day grogginess, and carry more risk in older adults. For ongoing sleep problems, fix sleep habits and see a doctor rather than using them nightly.
