Live from eBayLimescale is the number-one killer. An espresso machine that was run on hard water without descaling can have a furred-up boiler and blocked valves. Ask whether it was descaled regularly and where the owner lived (hard-water areas are tougher on machines). A quick descale is easy; a seized boiler is not, so factor it into the price of an older machine.
Test that it actually pulls a shot. Ask the seller to confirm it powers on, heats up, pumps water through the group head and steams milk. Listen for the pump; a machine that heats but will not pump has a problem. Check the portafilter and basket are included (they are fiddly to source separately) and that the group-head seal is not perished.
Match the machine to your effort level. A pod machine is grab-and-go; a semi-automatic with a portafilter makes far better coffee but needs a decent grinder and some practice. If buying a semi-auto, remember the grinder is half the setup, so budget for one if it is not included.
Value. Quality machines from the likes of Gaggia, Rancilio and Breville last for years and are cheap to service, so a well-kept used one is often far better value than a new budget machine.
