Find out whether it still has its subscription before anything else. Several of these are sold cheaply because the software that makes them useful is a paid plan tied to the previous owner, and a unit without it does far less than the reviews suggest. Ask which plan the seller was on and whether it transfers. Then check the space it needs, since a radar unit wants several metres behind the ball and a camera unit does not, confirm the stand, case and charger are included because those go missing first, and ask for a photo of it powered on and paired to a phone rather than sitting on a shelf.

How to buy a used launch monitor

Radar or camera decides whether it fits your space, and it is the first question, not the last. A radar unit tracks the ball after impact, so it wants room behind you and several metres of flight in front. A camera unit reads the ball and face at impact and works in a garage. Buying the wrong one for the room you have is the most expensive mistake here, and no amount of accuracy makes up for it.

The subscription is part of the price and often does not transfer. Some of these are close to useless without the paid app, and a used unit whose plan expired with the last owner is worth considerably less than one with an active transferable plan. Ask the seller outright which plan they were on. This is the single most common reason a listing looks like a bargain.

Carry distance is measured. Spin is often estimated. Consumer units measure ball speed and launch angle directly and infer the rest, which is fine for gapping your bag and misleading if you are chasing spin numbers. The expensive units measure more of it directly, and that is most of what you are paying for.

Check what it comes with. The metal stand, the case, the charging cable and the alignment sticks are the parts that vanish between owners, and replacing them costs real money on a unit that was cheap precisely because it was incomplete.

Indoors, you need more than the unit. A net or screen, a mat and enough ceiling are the rest of the cost, and a monitor bought without thinking about them tends to be resold within the year, which is part of why supply here is steady.

Value. The professional units hold their money for years because the people buying them are buying measurement rather than a gadget. The consumer units fall hard in the first two seasons and then flatten, so that is where buying used pays best, and it is exactly what the prices above show.

Common questions

Where are these prices from?

Live eBay listings. Pick a model and it fetches the current lowest-priced listings in real time, with the listing shown next to each price.

Radar or camera, which should I buy used?

Whichever suits the room. Radar tracks the ball in flight and wants several metres behind and in front; camera units read impact and work in a garage. This decides more than accuracy does, and it is the mistake that gets a unit resold.

Does the subscription transfer with a used unit?

Often not, and it matters. Several of these do far less without their paid app, so a unit whose plan expired with the previous owner is worth less than the listing suggests. Ask which plan they were on before you bid.

Are the numbers accurate?

Ball speed and launch angle are measured directly on almost all of them, which is enough to gap your bag honestly. Spin is estimated on the consumer units and measured on the expensive ones, and that difference is most of what the price gap buys.

What is usually missing?

The stand, the case, the charging cable and the alignment sticks, in that order. They are cheap individually and add up, and a unit priced well below the rest is often incomplete rather than a bargain.
