Cost per gram of protein never lies.

The price on the tub tells you nothing, because scoops and protein per scoop vary wildly. The only honest measure is what a gram of actual protein costs, and by that measure a budget whey can be three times cheaper than a premium plant powder for the same 30 grams. Pick how much you drink and see the real value.

Prices reviewed 31 July 2026 . Cost per 30g of protein from typical current retail and the label's protein per serving; flavours and tub sizes vary. Not nutrition advice.

The priciest protein costs 3× more per gram than the cheapest, over $500 a year for a daily shake

We costed 15 protein powders by the only fair measure, the cost per 30 grams of actual protein. Budget whey Body Fortress is cheapest at $0.60; premium whey isolates like Dymatize ISO100 run about $1.20; premium plant powders like Vega reach $2.00. The tub price and scoop count are noise, cost per gram of protein is the signal.

Method: tub price ÷ total protein grams (servings × protein per serving on the label), shown per 30g of protein so different scoop sizes compare fairly. Cost per year assumes the shakes a day you set. Prices are indicative USD. Cite this: "usefulHQ Protein Cost Study 2026", usefulhq.com/protein-cost-per-serving/.

Each shake is a 30g-protein serving. The powder has no upfront cost, so the per-serving price is the whole bill.

How this works. Per 30g protein is the tub price divided by the total protein it holds (servings times the protein per serving on the label), scaled to a standard 30g serving, the only fair way to compare when scoops and protein per scoop differ. Cost per year and total assume the shakes a day you set. The lesson is simple: a big cheap-looking tub with small or low-protein scoops can cost more per gram than a dearer one. Budget whey runs around 60 to 95 cents per 30g, premium whey isolate about a dollar, and plant powders 1.10 to 2.00. Whey is the value play; pay the plant premium only if you need dairy-free. Prices are indicative, confirm on the label.

Common questions

What is the cheapest protein powder per gram?

Budget whey blends at roughly 2 cents a gram, about 60 cents per 30g serving. Body Fortress, Nutricost and MyProtein Impact lead. Premium isolates run near a dollar a serving, and plant powders up to $2.

How do you compare protein value?

Ignore the tub price and scoop count. Divide the tub price by the total protein (servings times protein per serving on the label) to get cost per gram. A cheap-looking tub with small scoops can cost more per gram than a dearer one.

Is plant protein more expensive?

Usually. Orgain, Vega and Garden of Life run $1.10 to $2.00 per 30g protein, more than whey, because pea and rice protein cost more to source. Plain pea protein like NOW Sports is the cheapest plant option.

How much does a daily shake cost per year?

At one 30g shake a day, cheap whey is about $220 a year, premium isolate around $380, and premium plant over $700, a $500 gap for the same 30g of protein.
