Disposable batteries cost up to 25× more per use than a rechargeable, hundreds over a device's life

We costed 14 AA and AAA batteries by their real cost per use: the upfront cell and charger spread across its charges, versus a disposable's price every single time. A rechargeable Eneloop works out to about $0.05 a use; a disposable alkaline is $0.35 to $0.55, and a lithium disposable $1.30. A rechargeable pays for itself in roughly a dozen uses.

How this works. Per use is the marginal cost of one use: near zero for a rechargeable (just electricity), or the full purchase price for a disposable you throw away. Total over term adds the upfront cell and charger for rechargeables, then multiplies by the uses you set; all-in per use spreads that whole cost across every use, so it plummets the more you recharge. The crossover is the whole story: a rechargeable's upfront cost pays back in about a dozen uses, then it is pennies for years, while a disposable costs its full price every single time. The exception is low-drain gear, a remote or wall clock you change once a year, where a disposable's slow drain means the rechargeable never pays back. Prices are indicative, confirm before buying.

Are rechargeable batteries cheaper?

Yes, for anything you use often. An Eneloop AA costs a few dollars but lasts about 2,100 charges, so after a dozen uses it is about a penny each. A disposable alkaline is 35 to 55 cents every time. High-drain devices can save $200+ over their life.

How many times can you recharge an Eneloop?

About 2,100 cycles for standard Eneloop, around 500 for high-capacity Eneloop Pro. Even at a fraction of that, it is hundreds of uses per cell, which drops the cost per use to roughly a penny.

When are disposables better?

For low-drain gear you rarely change, a remote, wall clock or smoke alarm, a disposable lasts one to three years so a rechargeable never pays back. Lithium disposables also win in extreme cold and long emergency storage.

Do I need a special charger?
