Synths have a lot of moving controls, so ask the seller to confirm all keys sound and respond to velocity, every knob and slider works without crackle (dirty pots are common but usually cleanable), and the pitch and mod wheels return properly. Check the audio and MIDI or USB outputs actually pass signal, as a dead output points to a board fault.
Analog versus digital, and the age trap. Analog synths have a prized sound but their components drift and age, and repairs need a specialist, so factory calibration and condition matter. Digital synths are more stable but a failed screen or encoder can be hard to source on discontinued models. Decide which you want, and for vintage gear research the known faults of that specific model before buying.
