Pick a turntable model and see the lowest current prices on eBay, the biggest vinyl marketplace, with shipping, condition and seller rating side by side. Prices are pulled live, so what you see is what sellers are actually asking this minute.
Live from eBayThe stylus and cartridge are consumables. A record needle wears out after roughly 1,000 hours and a worn stylus damages your records, so ask the age of the cartridge and stylus. A replacement stylus is inexpensive on common cartridges, so factor it in rather than assuming the fitted one is good. Check the cartridge is a known brand, not a no-name.
Check the motor, speed and tonearm. Confirm the platter spins at a steady 33 and 45 rpm (belt-drive decks may just need a new belt, a cheap fix), the tonearm moves freely and cues smoothly, and there is no loud hum or rumble through the speakers. On automatic decks, test the auto-return. Make sure the dust cover hinges and the counterweight are present.
Built-in preamp or not. Some turntables have a built-in phono preamp (plug straight into any speaker) and some do not (you need a phono input or a separate preamp). Check which, so you are not surprised by silence when you set it up.
Value. Solid vintage decks from the likes of Technics and modern entry decks from Pro-Ject and Audio-Technica hold value well; a serviced used turntable with a fresh stylus is often better value and better built than a cheap new one.

Yes. Favour high-feedback sellers, check that it powers on and spins, look for detailed photos of the actual unit, confirm the tonearm moves freely, and lean on eBay's Money Back Guarantee if anything arrives damaged.
Replacement stylus or cartridge (styluses wear out), a cleaning kit, and possibly a preamp if you are plugging into powered speakers without one built in. Budget 30-80 dollars extra for these.
The cartridge holds the stylus (needle) that reads the record groove. Different turntables use different cartridge types. When your stylus wears out, you usually replace the whole cartridge, not just the stylus. Cost is 30-150 dollars depending on quality.
