Ask whether the barrels are still aligned before anything else. A knock can push the two sides out of collimation, and the result is not an obvious fault in a photograph: it is eye strain after ten minutes and a faint double image. Realignment is a workshop job that can cost more than a mid-range pair is worth. Ask the seller to look at a distant straight edge and say whether it lines up. Then check for haze or fungus on the inside of the glass, which is common in anything stored damp and cannot be cleaned out, and confirm the eye cups twist and hold, since those perish and are fiddly to replace.

How to buy used binoculars

Collimation is the fault that photographs cannot show you. If the two barrels are not aligned your eyes do the correcting, and you will not notice in the first minute, only in the headache afterwards. A drop is enough to cause it. Ask the seller to sight a distant vertical edge, a pole or a building corner, and say whether the two images sit level. Correcting it properly is a workshop job, so on anything under a few hundred dollars it writes the instrument off.

Look inside the glass, not at it. Scratches on the outer surfaces matter far less than haze, fogging or fungus on the internal elements, which is what you get from years in a damp cupboard and which no cleaning reaches. Ask for a photo taken looking through the objective toward a light. Anything milky is a repair, not a bargain.

Nitrogen purging fails silently. Waterproof models are sealed and gas filled, and old seals let go without any outward sign until the day they fog internally in the cold. It is the reason a twenty-year-old waterproof pair is worth much less than its original price suggests, and the reason a recent mid-range pair often beats an old flagship.

Eye relief decides whether you can use them with spectacles. If you wear glasses you need long relief and eye cups that twist down and stay down. Perished or missing cups are common on used pairs and are surprisingly awkward to source, so check they are present and firm.

Value. The alpha names hold their money for decades and are bought used precisely because the glass outlives the fashion. Budget lines fall hard and fast, which is exactly why buying those secondhand is the sensible move, and it is what the prices above show.

Common questions

Where are these prices from?

Live eBay listings. Pick a model and it fetches the current lowest-priced listings in real time, with the listing shown next to each price.

What is collimation and why does it matter so much?

It is whether the two barrels point at the same thing. Out of alignment, your eyes correct for it and you get eye strain and a faint doubling rather than an obvious fault. A drop causes it, photographs do not show it, and fixing it properly is a workshop job.

How do I spot fungus or haze?

Ask for a photo taken looking through the front element toward a light. Milkiness or a web pattern on the internal glass is fungus, it comes from damp storage, and no cleaning reaches it. Outer scratches matter far less.

Is an old flagship better than a new mid-range pair?

Often not. Waterproof models are sealed and gas filled, and old seals fail without warning, which is why a twenty-year-old top model can fog internally while a recent mid-range pair stays clear.

Which hold their value?

The alpha names, for decades, because good glass outlives fashion. Budget lines drop hard and quickly, which is the argument for buying those secondhand rather than new.
