Live from eBayLook through it before you look at the price. Hold the lens up to a bright light and check the glass for fungus (fine web-like threads), haze (a cloudy film) and scratches. Light dust is normal and rarely affects images, but fungus can spread and etch the coatings, and haze softens every shot, so both are serious. Also check the aperture blades are dry and snappy, not oily or sticky.
Test the moving parts. Zoom and focus rings should turn smoothly without grinding or excessive play, and on autofocus lenses confirm the AF actually drives and locks, as a dead focus motor is a costly repair. If the lens has image stabilisation, listen for it engaging. Check the mount for wear and that the electronic contacts are clean, so the lens talks to the camera.
Mind the mount and the era. Confirm the lens fits your camera's mount, and remember that adapting older lenses can lose autofocus or metering. Older manual-focus glass is cheap and often superb optically if you are happy focusing by hand. Include a lens hood and caps in the deal where possible.
Value. Good lenses outlast camera bodies and hold value well, so quality used glass is often the best money you can spend on image quality.
