Best value used CPU right now

Every chip ranked by multi-core compute per dollar, using PassMark scores and today's cheapest live price. Lower cost per 1000 points is better value for rendering, compiling and multitasking. Note that cache-heavy X3D chips (7800X3D, 5800X3D) punch far above this for gaming, so weigh that if you mainly play games. Tap a chip to see its listings.

How to buy used CPUs safely. The number that matters is the total including shipping, which we add up for you. Then check the seller's feedback (shown on every listing), verify the socket type matches your motherboard (AM5, LGA1700, etc.), and make sure the listing confirms the CPU has been tested and boots. Use eBay's Money Back Guarantee which covers you if the processor is faulty. Avoid listings for bent pins, coolers sold separately, or parts-only sales. CPUs rarely fail, so used is very safe.

How to buy a used CPU

Processors are one of the safest used buys. A CPU has no moving parts and rarely wears out, so a used chip that works on arrival will almost certainly keep working. The main risk is compatibility, not reliability: confirm the exact socket (such as AM4, AM5 or LGA1700) and that your motherboard's chipset and BIOS support that specific model before buying.

Inspect the pins and mind the packaging. On AMD chips the pins are on the processor, so check close-up photos for bent or missing pins, which are a dealbreaker. On modern Intel the pins are in the socket instead, so the chip itself is safer. Avoid vague "engineering sample" or "ES/QS" listings, which are pre-release chips that can be locked or unstable.

Generational value. The best value sits one or two generations back, where a former flagship now sells for a fraction of its launch price yet still outperforms current budget chips. Work out the real-world performance you need rather than chasing the newest generation, and check whether a cooler is included, as many used chips are sold bare.

Value. Used CPUs typically sell 40-60% below launch price for the same performance, making a last-gen chip one of the best-value PC upgrades going.

Common questions

Where are these CPU prices from?

Live eBay listings, the largest source of used and refurbished processors. Pick a model and it fetches the current lowest-priced listings in real time, updated every few minutes.

Is it safe to buy a used CPU?

Very safe. CPUs have no moving parts and rarely fail. Buy from high-feedback sellers, verify the socket type, and make sure the listing says the processor has been tested and works. eBay's Money Back Guarantee covers you if it doesn't boot.

How much cheaper is used vs new?

Usually 30-50% below retail, more if it is an older generation. Older flagships often have the best value because they drop faster in price but still have plenty of performance.

How do I know which socket my motherboard is?

Check your motherboard's manual or specs: modern AMD boards are AM5 (2022+), modern Intel are LGA1700 (2022+). Older boards use AM4 or LGA1150. The eBay listing will state the socket; make sure it matches.
