On the AMOLED screen, display a solid grey or white image and look for burn-in (faint ghost outlines of the status bar or keyboard), which is permanent. Then confirm the phone is not locked to the previous owner's Samsung/Google account: ask that it has been factory reset and signed out, or the FRP (Factory Reset Protection) lock will stop you setting it up.
