What to check on a used Nintendo Switch. Ask the seller to confirm the Joy-Con do not drift (the stick registering movement on its own), the screen has no cracks or dead pixels, the battery still lasts, and that it has been factory reset and removed from the previous owner's Nintendo Account. If you want to play on a TV, make sure the dock and HDMI/charger are included (the Lite cannot dock at all). Favour high-feedback sellers with real photos, and lean on eBay's Money Back Guarantee, which covers you if it arrives not as described.

How to buy a used Nintendo Switch safely

Pick the right model. The OLED has the best screen and docks to a TV, and is the one most people should want. The original V2 also docks to a TV and is a little cheaper. The Lite is smaller, cheaper and handheld-only, so it does not connect to a TV and has no removable Joy-Con, which suits portable-only players and kids. Decide whether you need TV play before you shop, because the Lite is a false economy if you do.

Joy-Con drift is the thing to check. The Switch's best-known fault is stick drift, where the analog stick moves the game on its own. Ask the seller to confirm the sticks are true, ideally in a short video. On the original and OLED the Joy-Con detach and are cheap enough to replace, but on the Lite the sticks are built in, so drift means an internal repair. Treat confirmed drift as a reason to pay less or move on.

Reset, account and what is in the box. The console must be factory reset and removed from the previous owner's Nintendo Account so your saves and eShop purchases work cleanly. Check the screen for cracks and dead pixels and that the battery still holds a charge. For TV play, confirm the dock, the HDMI cable and the official charger are all included, as buying them separately adds up.

Value. With the newer generation out, used Switch prices have softened and stock is plentiful, so a clean OLED or original at 20-40% below retail is strong value; the Lite is the cheapest way in if you only ever play handheld.

Common questions

Where do these prices come from?

Live eBay listings, the largest source of used Nintendo Switch consoles. Pick OLED, Lite or original and it fetches the current lowest-priced listings in real time, shown against retail so you can see the saving.

OLED, Lite or original: which is best?

The OLED has the best screen and docks to a TV (best for most people). The original also docks and is cheaper. The Lite is handheld-only and the cheapest, good for portable play and kids but it cannot connect to a TV.

Is a used Switch worth it?

Often, at 20-40% off retail, and stock is plentiful now the newer generation is out. Check for Joy-Con drift, screen condition, battery, and that it has been reset and removed from the old account.

What should I check first?

Joy-Con drift, the screen, the battery, and that it is factory reset and off the previous Nintendo Account. For TV play, confirm the dock, HDMI and charger are included. Total price with shipping is what matters.

"Off retail" compares today's used price with what the model cost new. For models still on sale that is the current price; for discontinued ones it is the launch price, so it shows how far the model has depreciated rather than a discount you could get on a new one.
