What to check on a used PS5. Ask the seller to confirm it powers on and reads discs (on the Disc edition, the drive is a known fault point), the fans are not excessively loud and there is no rattle, the HDMI port works (another weak spot), and that it has been factory reset and deactivated from the previous owner's PlayStation account. Make sure a DualSense controller, the power lead and an HDMI cable are included, and that the controller's sticks do not drift. Favour high-feedback sellers with real photos, and lean on eBay's Money Back Guarantee, which covers you if it arrives not as described.

How to buy a used PS5 safely

Disc, Digital or Pro. The Disc edition is the pick for most buyers because it plays physical games, which you can buy cheaply used, borrow, resell or trade in, and it doubles as a 4K Blu-ray player. The Digital edition is cheaper up front but download-only, so every game comes from the PlayStation Store at full digital price, which often costs more over time than the disc saving. The Pro is the powerful option for 4K gaming and is digital-only unless you add the separate disc drive. Decide how you buy games before you shop.

Test the disc drive, HDMI and fan. The three things that actually go wrong are the disc drive not reading or ejecting, the HDMI port failing (no picture), and a noisy fan or coil whine from a hard-used unit. Ask the seller to confirm all three, ideally in a short video showing a disc loading and a game running. A console that has been stood in a dusty, enclosed space and run hot for years is the one to avoid.

Reset, account and what is in the box. The PS5 must be factory reset and deactivated from the previous owner's account so your library and saves work cleanly. Check that a DualSense controller is included and its sticks do not drift, and that the power cable and HDMI lead are there. Bundles with extra controllers or games can be good value, but price the console alone first so you know what you are really paying for the extras.

Value. Used PS5 prices have steadied with plenty of stock, so a clean Disc edition at 15-35% below retail is solid value; the Digital is cheaper only if you truly never buy physical games, and the Pro is worth the premium mainly for 4K enthusiasts.

Common questions

Where do these prices come from?

Live eBay listings, the largest source of used PS5 consoles. Pick the Disc, Digital or Pro and it fetches the current lowest-priced listings in real time, shown against retail so you can see the saving.

Disc, Digital or Pro: which is best?

The Disc edition plays physical games (cheap used games, resale, 4K Blu-ray) and suits most buyers. The Digital is cheaper but download-only. The Pro is the powerful 4K option and is digital-only unless you add the separate disc drive.

Is a used PS5 worth it?

Often, at 15-35% off retail, with stock plentiful. Check the disc drive, HDMI port and fan noise, and that it has been factory reset and deactivated from the previous account.

What should I check first?

That it boots, reads discs (Disc edition), the HDMI works and the fan is not too loud, and that it is factory reset. Confirm a controller, power lead and HDMI cable are included. Total price with shipping is what matters.

"Off retail" compares today's used price with what the model cost new. For models still on sale that is the current price; for discontinued ones it is the launch price, so it shows how far the model has depreciated rather than a discount you could get on a new one.
