The Series S is smaller, cheaper and digital-only with less storage, aimed at 1440p, which suits budget buyers and Game Pass players happy to go all-digital. Decide whether you want physical games and 4K (Series X) or the cheapest way onto the current generation (Series S) before you shop, because the used prices reflect that gap.
Test the fan, HDMI and (on Series X) the disc drive. The things that actually go wrong are a noisy or grinding fan from a hard-used unit, an HDMI port that fails to output a picture, and, on the Series X, a disc drive that will not read or eject. Ask the seller to confirm these, ideally in a short video showing the dashboard and, for the Series X, a game disc loading. A console kept in a dusty, enclosed cabinet and run hot for years is the one to avoid.
Reset, account and what is in the box. The console must be factory reset and removed from the previous owner's Microsoft account so your profile, saves and Game Pass work cleanly. Check a controller is included and its sticks do not drift, and that the power cable and HDMI lead are present. Bundles with extra controllers or games can be good value, but price the console alone first so you know what you are really paying for the extras.
Value. Used Xbox prices have steadied with plenty of stock, so a clean Series X at 15-35% below retail is solid value; the Series S is the cheapest way in if you are happy with digital-only 1440p gaming, especially on Game Pass.
